NSA Jos Scientific Meeting November 2016

THE 24TH SCIENTIFIC CONFERENCE AND ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING OF THE NIGERIAN SOCIETY OF ANAESTHETISTS, WHICH HELD IN JOS, PLATEAU STATE ON NOVEMBER 21 – 25TH 2016.
The Nigerian Society of Anesthetists’ (NSA) 24th Scientific Conference and Annual General Meeting was held in Jos on November 21st – 25th 2016. Jos is the capital of Plateau State in Nigeria, which is regarded as the twelfth largest state in Nigeria, located in the North Central zone of the country and popularly referred to as “The Home of Peace and Tourism.” The scientific meeting started with a pre-conference workshop in Obstetric Anaelgesia and Essential Pain Management followed by Airway Management, Critical Care Management and Essential Pain Management.
The Obstetric workshop covered the various techniques of labour analgesia with current trends and future trend in resource poor settings. In the Interventional Pain Management workshop, the participants were acquainted with basic and advanced pain management techniques. Health workers were taught how to recognize, assess and treat pain and address the various barriers to pain management.
The workshop on Critical Care was a hands-on demonstration on ABL90 Flex arterial blood gas analyzer and Hamilton C3 ventilator. The Airway work workshop was on failed intubation drill, awake fibreoptic intubation and “dare to share”. Participants were also taken through a demonstration on the new airtraq video laryngoscope for oral and naso-tracheal intubation.
The conference was declared opened by the Chairman of opening ceremony, the executive governor of Plateau state Rt. Honorable Simon Bako Lalong, ably represented by the commissioner of Health Plateau state Dr. Kuden Kanshak. This was followed by the guest lecture – “Patient Safety in Anaesthesia” delivered by Dr. S. Isemede. Nine other lectures were delivered at plenary during the two days of scientific program. These included Fire drill; Haemorrhagic fever: The way forward for a developing country; Education in Anaesthesia: Is there need for a paradigm shift?; Safety in Anaesthesia: A review, Common Interventional pain techniques; Sustainable development goals: Lesson for the third world; Global Anaesthesia work force crisis: The finding of the lancet commission on global surgery; and Safety in Anaesthesia: A review for the practitioner.
Twenty one scientific paper abstracts were submitted for presentation, and twenty one papers were presented during the scientific sessions. These were divided into two sessions. Trauma and General anaesthesia session received 11 scientific paper abstracts, 3 paper abstracts in pain and regional anaesthesia, 2 critical care paper abstracts, 3 paediatric anaesthesia papers and 2 obstetric anaesthesia paper abstracts.
About 138 delegates participated in this 24th annual event. The annual general meeting/election held with the following outcome; President – Dr. B. Onajin-Obembe, Vice President- Dr. E. Nwasor, Secretary General- Dr. C. Nnaji, Treasurer- Dr. Morayo Salawu, Financial Secretary- Dr. Tobin Maxwell, Assistant Secretary General- Dr. Sarki Adamu, PRO/Socials- Dr. Lucky Angashang. The meeting was concluded with a dinner session, and awards were presented to Lecturers.
We want to specially thank all the Executives of NSA, facilitators, lecturers, delegates, our sponsor, companies and organizations that participated in this scientific conference and annual event, without you, it wouldn’t have been a successful event. Words are not enough to specially thank Professor Yemi Olufolabi our resource person from Duke University, United States of America for donating to the Jos University Teaching Hospital a wireless video Airtraq for intubation and personal laryngoscopes to participants and Dr. Kingsley Enohumah from Tameside Hospital NHS Foundation trust, Manchester, United Kingdom who also donated Airtraq special laryngoscopes to the institution. We also appreciate our guest lecturer Dr. Sonny Isemede from County Durhan and Darlington Foundation NHS Trust, England, for a very thought provoking lecture. We look forward to the 2017 6th All Africa Anaesthetists Congress in Abuja, Federal Capital Territory.
